I recently became licensed as a LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor). It was an arduous process but I knew that my passion for practicing therapy in San Diego, which consisted of an eclectic blend of mind-body, eastern healing modalities, would be more recognized if I had State and National licensing certification. Now I can give a wider range of people skillful care, grounded in the best of western psychotherapy and the wisdom of eastern philosophy. Milestones are a time of reflection for me, so as I received this license, I reflected on what it means to be a therapist in San Diego.

Yes, I could say I practice yoga therapy, psychotherapy, somatic therapy or chakra therapy but these words don’t capture the essence of my work.

Traditional forms of therapy explore conditioned thoughts, emotions, and unresolved traumas with the goal of gaining understanding and ultimately of healing, but I believe that it is equally important to reflect back to clients their essential wholeness and remind them of the deepest place within where nothing needs to be fixed. What if all therapy was approached from this place of wholeness? How much deeper and more satisfying would the outcomes be?

When I think of the conditions of deep healing during times of suffering (in relation to myself and my work with students and clients), I think of three concepts: trust, listening and acceptanceIn my own journey of healing, the more I listen to whatever is arising in my body and mind, accept the message and trust that I will be supported through the process, the more love and peace I experience. In my most desperate moments, I allow myself to feel the physical pain of the  emotions in my body and use self touch to deepen the mind body connection. This process leaves me with a feeling of trust that “this too shall pass.”  By following the wisdom of the body and mind, embracing the rhythms of change and using my own touch, another healing dimension emerges.  I witness the power of spirituality, where wholeness and peace reside.

Jean Klein, a French author, teacher and philosopher says “Trust is not a belief. Trust is openness, accepting the possibility. You automatically accept the possibility in a moment of listening.  In pure listening there is neither acceptance nor non-acceptance, only listening itself.”
